Research interests
Magnetic geochronology using magnetic indicators at a variety of timescales, applied to archaeology and pre-Holocene successions, especially in the Triassic. Sediment tracing and source to sink studies both in the marine and terrestrial aquatic environments. Source and fate of environmental magnetic particles. Magnetic proxies for understanding past environmental change. Archaeological geophysics, especially magnetic sensory systems. Sedimentary fabrics, their production, measurement and evaluation.
I am the joint Vice chair of the Subcommission on Triassic Stratigraphy (of the International Commission on Stratigraphy) and am also involved in collaborative international efforts of the boundary task forces for the Triassic, Jurassic and Carboniferous Subcommissions. I have served as steering group member for several international conferences in the UK and Svalbard (Norway), and acted as a session co-convenor at the EGU. I am also a member of the Geological Society of London Stratigraphy Commission, which informs government and the activities of the British Geological survey. Currently contributing to the Triassic chapter of the Petroleum Geological Atlas of the Southern Permian Basin, and preparing a publication of the summary magnetostratigraphy of the Triassic, and its relevance to the geological timescale. Research income, since 2001 has totalled £157,000, from a variety of sources. Author of 71 publications, with 26 of these being book chapters, which have 475 citations.
