Postgraduate Opportunities

We would welcome enquiries from persons who are suitable qualified and would wish to apply for PhD topics with us. A variety of topic areas are of interest to us including:

bulletMagnetic records of climate change in sediments, from lake, marine, loess or other archives.
bulletMagnetic Geochronology applied to specific problems such as environmental change and timescales. Focus areas are archaeomagnetic studies, magnetostratigraphic studies (particularly in the Permo-Triassic, Jurassic and Carboniferous).
bulletExtinction events in earth history- timescales and global links
bulletRiver catchment- source to sink sediment tracing studies.
bulletMarine sediment tracing studies on the continental shelves and coastal waters, particularly around the UK.
bulletImproving magnetic tools for sediment provenance evaluation in riverine or marine environments.
bulletArchaeological finds provenance evaluation
bulletMagnetic monitoring and evaluation of particulate pollution, both on spatial and temporal scales.
bulletSub-surface modeling over archaeological sites, using geophysical prospection data.
bulletBiomagnetism, related to human diseaese, or other sources of biomagnets

These areas are not specifically linked to funding sources. However, if you are interested in any of these subject areas and hope to go on and do a PhD contact us to discuss funding possibilities. In the first instance also have a look at the geography postgraduate page, where you will find useful links to sources of PhD funding.

The general process of application is:

  1. Make informal enquiries about topic area, to see if it would suite you
  2. After e-mail discussions Identify possible sources of funding
  3. Make a formal application, details of which are on the post graduate page above
  4. Attempt to gain the funding
  5. Application accepted by the university

Post-Doctoral studies

We would also welcome any enquiries related to post-doctoral work from EU or non-EU persons. Particularly if you feel this could be linked to the Marie Curie funding mechanism of the EU, a useful source of funding for well qualified researchers from both inside and outside the EU.

Contact in the first instance e-mail: either m.hounslow or b.maher using address: @lancaster.ac.uk
